Entrées Across the Globe: A Food Journey at the University of Minnesota

When thinking about main entrees, restaurants around campus have excellent choices from around the globe to try. In this post we will highlight and review 4 different restaurants around campus that will hopefully spark your curiosity to try out new cuisine.



Banh Appetit

Banh Appetit is a Vietnamese restaurant located in Dinkytown that specializes in banh mi sandwiches, which, if you don't know, are sandwiches on French bread with marinated meat, containing pickled and fresh vegetables, finished off with a spicy aioli sauce. They are truly elite sandwiches, and at Banh Appetite, they are amazing. The vegetables are fresh, the bread is light and airy, and the meat is juicy and tender. All components are up to snuff. The sandwich comes with fries as a side, which is a treat. The restaurant has an assortment of other Vietnamese delicacies as well, but to try that, go there yourself!

JJ’s Poké

Local Hawaiian establishment is a Dinkytown favorite. Serving customizable poké bowls, sushi burritos and traditional ramen all of which incorporate a diversity of flavors. Poké is a Hawaiian staple that’s become very popular in the rest of the states; with the first poké restaurant opening on the West Coast only a few years ago. With the variety of base, protein, and add-ins available there are options for all taste and dietary preferences. As well the option to order off their signature bowl menu and ramen entrees.

Afro Deli 

Afro Deli is a popular establishment in the Stadium Village area that specializes in freshly made African food. They offer special eats like Sambusa, Gyros, Curries, and so much more. The variety of offerings is a big draw of this location, as there is no shortage of delicious new foods to try. This restaurant is also no stranger to the U of M community, and often has a long line of students waiting to get their hands on these mouthwatering delicacies. They’re even friendly to local dietary restrictions, as all their food is freshly made and Halal. So if you’re looking to try a new delicious local restaurant, give this place a try!

Tacos Locos

This is a local Mexican restaurant that may be underrated, but it is a must. Tacos Locos has an extensive menu that would make any Mexican food lover’s mouth water with all of the classics present. The platters are restaurant favorites coming with an assortment of rice, beans, guacamole, and whatever protein is ordered— all served with a couple tortillas on the side. Outside of the platters menu, there is still lots of variety to choose from, such as tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, nachos, burritos, and much more! Being relatively new compared to the other options to this list, this is a place you have to check out the next time you are in the mood for Mexican food.
