Bringing Together A Community
Pickleball, with its unique blend of athleticism and social interaction, has emerged as a sport that wonderfully brings people together and highlights the importance of community.
Pickleball was created in 1965 and has been a source for community building and human connection ever since. In more recent years, Pickleball has become increasingly popular with organizations forming, tournaments being held, and courts opening up throughout different cities. Whether you're a seasoned player or a novice, the welcoming and inclusive nature of pickleball fosters a sense of camaraderie that transcends age, skill level, and background. On the courts, players of all walks of life unite in the pursuit of fun and fitness, exchanging laughter, encouragement, and friendly competition. It's not uncommon to see intergenerational matchups, where grandparents, parents, and children share the same court, reinforcing family bonds and teaching the values of teamwork and sportsmanship. The sport's focus on doubles play further accentuates the sense of community, as players must communicate and collaborate with their partners, forging connections that extend beyond the game. In this way, pickleball has become more than just a sport; it's a vibrant and inclusive community that celebrates the joy of play and the power of coming together.
Health Benefits
Pickleball, a fast-growing racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, offers a multitude of health benefits for participants of all ages. First and foremost, pickleball is an excellent cardiovascular workout that enhances heart health and promotes efficient circulation. The game's dynamic nature encourages players to engage in constant movement, improving agility, balance, and coordination. Moreover, pickleball is gentle on the joints, making it accessible to those who might have joint issues or are looking for a lower-impact sport. It also enhances muscular strength and endurance, particularly in the legs, arms, and core. Beyond the physical aspects, pickleball fosters social connections and mental well-being, as it's often played in a social setting, providing an avenue for stress reduction and improved mental health. Overall, pickleball is a delightful way to stay active, improve physical fitness, and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Growth Of The Game
If you’ve lived in any urban area over the last 3 years, odds are you're quite familiar with the sights and sounds of pickleball. Like the generic alarm on your iPhone, the sound of plastic-on-plastic “dinks'' is universally disliked. However, pickleball has spiked in popularity over the last 3 years, being regarded as a safe and entertaining game during the pandemic-era. Pickleball has made its way outside of senior communities and into a more modern spotlight. Recently, the professional leagues have seen the likes of YouTube icons David Dobrik and Dude Perfect, garnering a younger audience for the sport.
A major upside of pickleball is the ease of entry for new participants. With far less necessary gear and a format that is easier to adopt, the relatively new game has become interesting to many. The rise in pickleball popularity has also led to many country clubs and health clubs converting their tennis courts to pickleball. The smaller footprint allows for more courts; more courts lead to more paying customers. With the current global pickleball industry sitting just shy of $2 billion, many experts don’t see the growth coming to a halt any time soon. With major sporting networks like ESPN starting to cover pickleball tournaments, the game continues to reach new eyes. There will continue to be incentives for communities and clubs to adopt the sport, and with more support and funding, who knows how large pickleball could be in 10 to 15 years. Maybe the next generation of athletes will no longer want to play tennis at Wimbledon, but rather Pickleball on the world stage.
